Walking in the Cloud(s): Challenges for Online Literacy Instruction

Media consumption has changed dramatically over the past ten years. Today, individuals are likely to do most of their reading online and to get most of their news online and through social media.i Time on mobile apps has doubled while television, computer and laptop time have all declined.ii Many regions have leapfrogged over wired devices all together, with Asia and Africa representing the largest percentage of mobile Internet usage worldwide; mobile Internet users are set to overtake traditional broadband users in the near future.iii
The way students learn also has been transformed by this growth of digital media. Seventy percent of preschoolers in the United Kingdom were using learning apps on a tablet device in 2015, and 65% of K-12 classrooms in the United States were making weekly use of an educational app.iv While institutions of higher education from Norway to Cambodia are investing in developing digital tools to better serve their students, the educational technology space is likewise crowded with companies hoping to come up with the latest ed-tech unicorn.
As educators of online literacy, this quickly changing and dizzying world presents a number of unique challenges for which online literacy educators--those who specialize in reading, alphabetic writing, and digital composition--are particularly well poised. We encourage submissions that focus on the online teaching and how the interaction of students and teachers are affected with this change of interface. We would like presenters to consider writing, reading and digital literacies for mobile learning and questions such as:
Proposals should be prepared for blind review, and therefore the authors' names and institutional affiliations should not appear within the proposal. Peer review will commence promptly after the submission deadline, and notifications will quickly follow.
Each proposal should include the following information:

- What do online literacy classes look like in a mobile environment using cloud-based applications?

- The submission’s title
- The abstract (up to 300 words)
- A list of keywords (10 maximum)
- The type of presentation (paper proposal or virtual poster proposal)
- Target audience (K-12, Higher Education, Developers, or Other)
